360 Panoramas

360 Panoramas were the first Virtual Image Format to be developed. They were originally (and still can be) made by stitching a number (6 or more) photos together to get a complete 360 degree view as demonstrated by the image below.

This technique produces good results when taken correctly but is labour intensive.

To simplify the process one-shot lenses have been produced that capture 360 degrees in one shot producing a donut shaped image as below. A rectangular image is then extracted (similar to stitched panorama above) from the donut and it can then be printed or displayed below as a virtual image.

This image demonstrates a problem with any one shot system, the photographer tends to be in the shot in open places, especially in the city!
These one-shot images are perfect for the Internet as they are quick to load but produce poorer prints due to the poorer optics required to capture so much. Spherical images can also be made by stitching 4 images together.
